Mum makes a magical Grinch-inspired Christmas tree – all for under £100

A thrifty mum has spent two years gathering materials to make a magical and budget-friendly Grinch-inspired Christmas tree, all for under £100.

Christmas-obsessed Cleo Bailey, 42, made the impressive 7ft tree after finding cut-price items in high street shops.

The mum-of-four started getting ready in January 2020 – shopping for discount decorations ready for this year.

She found the grumpy-themed decorations at stores like B&M and Home Bargains, spending as little as 20p per item.

The tree was bought from Wilko and cost him £50 – up from £150 at the January sales.

She used chicken wire to create the bend at the top of the tree – like the Christmas trees in Whoville – where the grinch comes from.

Cleo’s husband Darren, 38, posted the tree on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group on Facebook and received 8,000 likes.

Cleo, a stay-at-home mum from Loughborough, Leicestershire, said: “I’m obsessed with Christmas – it’s my favorite time of year.

“My dream job is to be a Christmas decoration designer.

“I get a lot of inspiration from social media and always try to recreate things on a budget.

“Every year I try to do it myself and this year has been the best yet.

“It took two years and I’m really happy with the result.”

Cleo was inspired to create the tree after spotting a similar design on Instagram.

But the online version would have cost her thousands of dollars, so she decided to create a budget version.

Cleo scoured stores like B&M, Wilko and Home Bargains to find discount decorations during the January 2020 sales.

She spent between 20p and £2 on the various trinkets and the grinch themed decorations.

The Christmas tree was his biggest steal at £50, compared to £150 at Wilko.

“It took me two years to find everything for the tree,” she continues.

“I had a vision for the tree, so I didn’t want to do it until I had it all figured out.”

To give the tree the iconic Whoville curvature at the top, Cleo fashioned a curvature out of a piece of chicken wire and covered in faux fir, to match the rest.

Cleo lives at home with her boys Ty, 16, Zak, 15, and children Darren, Blake, 11, and Piper, 7, and they are all huge fans of her creation.

She said: “I really do everything for Christmas.

“I create Christmas scenes on window sills and love doing DIY things like making wreaths.

“Christmas is such a magical time of year, I can’t wait for it.

“I loved doing the tree and I hope I can inspire others to get stuck in and give it a try.”
