Nightfall! What really happened at the Fashion Awards 2022?

(James Peltekyan)

‘Just call me Ripple for the night,” Paloma Faith told Us, looking up from under her 70s bowl-cut wig at the annual extravaganza that was the 2022 Fashion Awards (FKA the British Fashion Awards) fueled by Diet Coke and Moët & Chandon.

‘You what?’ we said, ‘My dress… It’s very wavy, isn’t it Julia?’ She asked London legend Princess Julia who sat with us, twirling us around in her Iris Van Herpen chiffon and tulle dress. ‘Yeah, what is it [Van Herpen] don’t’ Julia explained. OK so. Glad we cleared that up.

The top score of the night was getting a selfie with Tilda Swinton that everyone – designer, muse, model, civilian, gay, straight and undefined – adored. Show host Jodie Turner-Smith even suggested Swinton should run as our next prime minister given the role seems to be opening up every eight weeks, she joked.

Not a bad cry, we could do with a little more Tilda in our lives to be honest. Swinton responded when she took the stage to present Jefferson Hack with the Special Recognition Award for Cultural Conservation: “You should all move to Scotland!”

Elsewhere, Burna Boy forgot his glasses and so had to bring Stormzy up on stage to help him read the autocue; we caught a naughty stylist and designer trying to get a cheeky fag in the bathroom and Katie Grand received the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator. We even saw a poor Japanese editor become a fashion killer down the hall and stomped under a European blogger’s white-mange dress, her heel catching in the tulle and then hitting the floor with an almighty bang (she was going well, we stayed to check).

Closer to a selfie with Swinton? Near a table. “Shout at her – you know her!” DJ Jodie Harsh urged Princess Julia, “I can’t,” Julia replied, “she’s about to sit down and have her tea.” So, alas, without a selfie, you’ll have to make do with this playlist of Harsh and DJ Fat Tony, who took the stage and played B2B to close the evening:
