Nick Kyrgios has jokingly suggested he might consider retirement if he wins a Grand Slam in 2023.

Although he delivered the joke as a clear joke, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to many if Kyrgios retired immediately after winning a Slam.

Kyrgios has made it clear that he now believes he can win a Grand Slam and therefore feels the pressure to do so before he can quit the sport.

At the same time, Kyrgios has a distaste for certain elements of tour life, particularly media scrutiny and press demands.

Kyrgios made the Wimbledon final this season with an incredible run that suggested there could be more to come from the mercurial Aussie.

He believes that winning a Grand Slam would fulfill his goals, although he is sure that such a victory would further increase his expectations.

“Hopefully I can win a Slam and just retire,” Kyrgios joked between matches at the World Tennis League exhibition in Dubai.

“Will I sign again? Honestly, I don’t know.

“It’s taken a lot of hard work this season, a lot of discipline and it seems like the better you are doing, everyone wants a little more from you and it gets more stressful.

“But I had a lot of fun this season. And I’m finally just proud to say that I made a Slam final and started to live up to some expectations. I had a lot of fun, I enjoyed it, I felt really better and on the pitch.

Kyrgios enjoys the World Tennis League exhibition team environment which has seen him team up with men and women from other countries.

He added: “I’m a big fan of the team environment, I think it’s pretty cool. It’s a good experience for the fans and the players, there’s not a lot of events where I can be seen next to Rohan Bopanna and Bianca Andreescu so it’s pretty cool, it gives tennis a bit of a different dynamic.

One of the big strains the tour places on Kyrgios is being away from his family, but he enjoyed having them with him in Dubai to celebrate an early Christmas.

“Obviously coming from Australia, I don’t have them with me often and I’m not going to spend Christmas in Australia, so they decided to come here and spend a few days here and enjoy it,” said- he declared.

“We’re doing a few things and my nephew is here, so it’s a pretty exciting time.”
