Henry Cavill Won’t Return to ‘The Witcher’ Despite Superman Exit and Fan Demand

Henry Cavill is no longer officially Superman, but that doesn’t mean he’s returning to Netflix’s “The Witcher.” The variety confirmed that “The Witcher” season 4 is moving forward unchanged, meaning Liam Hemsworth will play the role of Geralt of Rivia. Cavill played the role for three seasons, but he confirmed his exit from the series in October shortly after announcing his return as Superman in Warner Bros.’ DC Universe. With Cavill’s Superman officially over, fans wondered if he would return in “The Witcher.” This will not be the case.

Cavill returned as Superman in the credits scene of “Black Adam”. While Warner Bros. was courting screenwriters for a new Superman movie directed by Cavill and produced by Charles Roven, the plan was turned upside down when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in November. The duo are overhauling the DC Universe, starting with a new Gunn-scripted Superman movie that won’t feature Cavill.

“Peter and I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more delighted about; we will be able to share exciting information about our first projects at the start of the new year,” Gunn announced on December 15 on Twitter.

“Among those on the slate is Superman. In the early stages, our story will focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character won’t be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting. with Henry and we are huge fans and have talked about a number of exciting possibilities of working together in the future.

Insiders said The variety that Gunn’s screenplay will focus on Superman’s life as a small-time reporter in the fictional city of Metropolis. Audiences will encounter him meeting key characters, such as his colleague Lois Lane. Because Gunn’s Superman is younger, there was no way Cavill would play the role.

“This is sad news, everyone. After all, I will not return as Superman,” Cavill wrote on Instagram following the news. “After being told by the studio to announce my return in October, before they were hired, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. I respect that James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and everyone involved in the new universe the best of luck and the happiest of fortunes.

Fans of “The Witcher” weren’t too thrilled when Cavill announced his exit and the show confirmed Liam Hemsworth would reprise the role. In an interview with The varietyNetflix’s head of American and Canadian scripted series Peter Friedlander assured fans that Hemsworth was the right choice.

“Henry is an amazing Geralt and I think Liam will continue and be an amazing Geralt as well,” Friedlander said. “There’s been a legacy of incredible and iconic characters where the cast has changed and we’re extremely optimistic about that. We’ll continue to honor the IP, the fans, the storytelling, throughout.
