Harry Potter fans have been divided online after learning that a scene from the very first film may not have been quite what it seemed.

In the opening scene of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 2001, the young wizard’s cousin Dudley Dursley is seen running up and down the stairs of their Privet Drive home in an attempt to wake him up.

Potter, who was orphaned after his parents died, was forced to live in a cupboard under the stairs by his muggle uncle Vernon and aunt Petunia.

Viewers previously believed that Dudley exclaimed, “Wake up, Potter!” as he rushed down the stairs. However, the subtitles of the scene now reveal that he really says, “Wake up, cousin!”

The clip, which made the rounds on TikTok, left fans of the film adaptation split on the right track.

One TikTok user said, “It’s Potter. There’s no way Dudley calling him cousin…cousin would imply Dudley claiming him as his family and not his home whipping boy.

“If you think Potter you hear Potter, if you think cousin you hear cousin,” another remarked.

A third commented, “I hear Potter. I don’t know why in the subtitle says cousin.

“It was always cousin,” insisted another while a fan added, “I can hear both of them.”

Meanwhile, a bilingual fan reasoned, “I think it’s ‘cousin’ because also in the Italian translation it says cousin.”

Last month, Warner Bros said it would be keen to make more Harry Potter films if the studio could get the green light from JK Rowling, who wrote the original books they were based on.

The studio released eight Harry Potter films from 2001 to 2011 to huge acclaim. They made previously unknown child actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Tom Felton stars, and grossed $7.7 billion worldwide.

He partnered with Rowling on the Fantastic Beasts franchise, which was a case of diminishing returns at the box office. The latest episode, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, debuted in April and grossed $405.1 million worldwide.

It’s unclear if they’ll go ahead with the two slated movies to complete his five-picture slate.

Rowling has become a controversial figure in recent years and has been accused of being transphobic.

This led to a number of Harry Potter film stars speaking out against her, including Radcliffe, who expressed support for the trans community in light of the author’s tweets and comments.
