Gadirova, Mead, Muirhead, O’Sullivan, Stokes and Wightman – SPOTY contenders

The winner of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022 will be announced on Wednesday.

The six nominees have been revealed, with England footballer Beth Mead the favorite to succeed tennis star Emma Raducanu.

Here, the PA news agency takes a closer look at the candidates.

Jessica Gadirov

The 18-year-old gymnast has had a stellar 2022, capped off by becoming only the fifth British athlete to win an individual world title in artistic gymnastics. Gadirova achieved this with her floor routine at Liverpool in November after winning team silver and all-around bronze. A team bronze medalist at the Olympics last summer, Gadirova also retained her European title on floor.

Beth Mead

The Lionesses will feature prominently on the BBC One show and it would be a huge surprise if Mead didn’t walk away with the main prize. The Arsenal striker was named Player of the Tournament in England’s Euro 2022 success and also won the Golden Boot after scoring six goals and adding five assists. His international tally for the season of 20 goals was a new England record.

Eve Muirhead

Britain’s tough Beijing Winter Olympics came to a golden end as captain Muirhead led her curling rink to glory. The British women are just through the round robin stage before overtaking Sweden and claiming a final victory over Japan. Muirhead completed his collection of major titles with gold at the World Mixed Doubles Championship before announcing his retirement.

Snooker’s biggest star claimed his seventh world championship title in 2022 with an 18-13 victory over Judd Trump, equaling Stephen Hendry’s record and becoming the oldest winner of the crown at 46. O’Sullivan is ranked number one in the world and also won the Champions Titles and Hong Kong Masters this year. He never won the SPOTY title.

Stokes was voted Sports Personality of the Year in 2019 and is in contention again after a hugely successful year. He guided England to the T20 World Cup, holding his nerve under enormous pressure, and has overseen three Test series victories since being appointed captain in April. On Tuesday he helped England make history by becoming the first team to win 3-0 in Pakistan.

The Scot completed his medal streak at other major championships over the summer, winning European silver and Commonwealth bronze.
