Kathryn Nesbitt has been selected for England’s final clash with Senegal at the Al-Bayt Stadium, becoming the first female official to lead the line in a World Cup game for England.

Nesbitt, who was a professor of chemistry at the University of Towson in Maryland before refereeing full-time, is among the group of female referees and assistants selected for Fifa’s biggest tournament for the first time in Qatar.

Ivan Barton was appointed referee for England’s Round of 16 game against Senegal on Sunday night, with another Salvadoran official, David Moran, his other assistant along with Nesbitt.

Gareth Southgate’s side have had Japanese referee Yoshimi Yamashita as their fourth official in their last two matches, but Nesbitt became the first female official to step away from the technical area for a World Cup game.

Nesbitt spoke about the competition between the referees and his adaptation to the heat of Doha earlier in the tournament. “I think we were all invited here as similar referees. We all deserved the position to be here and that’s how we feel, a team,” she said.

“It’s the same as the player, everyone here has reached the top competition and now wants the No.1 game. Of course there’s the utmost respect and we want to support each other on and off the pitch. field as a referee team. I come from a much colder climate but I enjoy the sun, it’s manageable.
